Nintendo of America has partnered with the Interstate Scholastic Esports Alliance (ISEA) to launch competitive gaming events for students in grades four through twelve, reaching more than 80,000 participants across the United States.
Competitions will feature Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED consoles, with Nintendo supplying free Nintendo Switch Online memberships and digital game download codes.

ISEA President Danielle Johnson hailed the collaboration, noting that school-based gaming programs often connect students who might otherwise miss out on team-based or social activities.
The move is notable given Nintendo’s historically cautious approach to esports. In November 2023, the company revised its Super Smash Bros. community tournament guidelines, placing limits on event size and monetization options. These changes sparked debate over Nintendo’s willingness to support grassroots competitive scenes.
We are so excited to partner with Nintendo as we continue to grow and expand competitive gaming opportunities for students across the country
Danielle Johnson, President of ISEA
This partnership signals a different strategic angle: rather than focusing on large-scale commercial tournaments, Nintendo is leaning into structured, school-based competitions. The approach aligns with the company’s family-friendly brand image while fostering long-term engagement among younger players.
