Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 has officially surpassed Mario Kart 8, climbing to the fourth spot on the list of all-time best-selling video games. According to Take-Two Interactive’s latest financial report, the 2018 Western adventure has now sold over 79 million copies worldwide.
This milestone places the game behind only Minecraft (over 350 million), Grand Theft Auto V (around 220 million), and Wii Sports (roughly 82.9 million). The combined sales of the Red Dead franchise have now exceeded 106 million units, reaffirming Rockstar’s dominance in the gaming industry.
Despite being nearly seven years old, Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to demonstrate remarkable sales momentum, boosted by discounts, re-releases, and strong word of mouth. Analysts note that the game’s longevity is impressive, given that it achieved this success without major platform bundles or remasters.
By comparison, Mario Kart 8 benefited from long-term sales across two Nintendo consoles — Wii U and Switch — yet was finally overtaken by Rockstar’s cinematic open-world epic.

Industry experts suggest Red Dead Redemption 2’s immersive storytelling, technical excellence, and cinematic design continue to attract new players, while anticipation builds for Grand Theft Auto VI, now slated for release in November 2026.
Rockstar’s achievement underscores the studio’s unmatched ability to create games that transcend genres and generations, blending emotional storytelling with blockbuster-scale appeal.
