Mark Rubin, the Executive Producer behind the free-to-play shooter XDefiant, has officially parted ways with Ubisoft following the game’s shutdown on June 3, 2025. In a surprise twist, Rubin also announced he’s stepping away from the gaming industry altogether.
Taking to X, Rubin thanked fans for sticking with XDefiant and gave a shoutout to the dev team that powered the game’s launch in May 2024.
I really want to praise and salute all of the devs that worked on XDefiant! The cards were heavily stacked against you, but you managed to produce a really fun and terrific game!
Mark Rubin
In a heartfelt note, Rubin revealed that XDefiant faced an uphill battle from day one — lacking marketing push and the right resources to keep the game alive post-launch. Despite a promising start, the team struggled to roll out updates and fix issues, leading to the decision to pull the plug.

Rubin’s exit marks the end of an era for a developer who also played a major role in shaping Call of Duty’s golden years. With nearly a decade at Infinity Ward, he helped launch iconic titles like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and its 2009 sequel, Modern Warfare 2.
While there’s no word yet on what comes next for the team or the genre, one thing’s clear: it’s game over for XDefiant, but the story for Ubisoft is far from done.
