The announcement saw Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney join Unity CEO Matt Bromberg on stage, symbolizing a significant “ceasefire” in the engine wars to prioritize the growth of the “open metaverse.”
Under the new agreement, creators using the Unity engine will gain access to Fortnite’s massive audience of over 500 million registered accounts.
Utilizing a newly developed networking protocol, Unity developers can port their titles into the Fortnite ecosystem starting in 2026, allowing them to tap into Epic’s creator economy without switching engines.
Just like the early days of the web, we believe that companies need to work together in order to build the open metaverse in a way that’s interoperable and fair

The partnership is reciprocal. Unity will integrate support for Unreal Engine into its cross-platform commerce and LiveOps dashboard. Beginning in early 2026, Unreal developers will be able to use Unity’s backend solutions to manage digital catalogs, pricing, and web shops across PC, mobile, and the web.
All Unity-built content published to Fortnite will undergo safety and ratings checks similar to those currently applied to Fortnite Creative islands.
