Microsoft has officially confirmed that it is developing a free, ad-supported version of its Xbox Cloud Gaming service. According to internal sources and multiple reports, the new tier will allow users to stream select games at no cost, provided they watch advertisements.
The streaming experience is reportedly limited in session length and game catalogue: internal tests indicate sessions are capped at roughly one hour, with a proposed limit of five free hours per month, and pre-roll ads lasting approximately two minutes.

The free tier is expected to support devices including PC, Xbox consoles, handhelds, and web streaming, enabling Microsoft to reach a broader global audience.
Whilst a full public launch date has not been confirmed, the company is conducting internal beta testing and preparing for a wider rollout in the months ahead.
This move comes amid recent price increases for the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tier and efforts by Microsoft to make cloud gaming more accessible. Observers say the free ad-supported tier could serve as a conversion funnel to paid subscriptions while expanding reach into cost-sensitive markets.
