Movistar KOI Dropped from VCT EMEA: Riot Cites Repeated Violations

Riot Games has terminated its partnership with Movistar KOI in the VCT EMEA, resulting in the team’s immediate exit from the league. According to Riot’s announcement on X, the organization failed to comply with its contractual obligations, specifically:

  • It did not replace Ibai Llanos as the primary match broadcaster in a timely manner
  • It failed to meet the required co-streaming hours—a clause unique to KOI’s partnership

Riot claims these breaches were flagged multiple times during the 2024 season, while KOI attributes the failures to administrative delays caused by its January 2024 merger with Movistar Riders and MAD Lions.

In a video posted on X, Ibai Llanos expressed frustration over the abruptness of the decision and the lack of prior warning: “Yesterday they sent us an email… ‘You’re out of the league.’ Just like that,” he said. Riot reportedly dismissed his offers to co-stream or otherwise assist.

Importantly, Riot clarified that this decision only affects Movistar KOI’s status in the VCT EMEA; the organization may still participate in other Riot esports leagues.
