Valve Updates CS2 VRS to Limit Multi-Region Team Representation

This update follows an earlier change to Valve’s Major Supplemental Rulebook, which redefined how teams are regionally classified. The goal is to prevent teams from gaming the system by choosing a weaker region to increase their odds of qualifying. Image source: Valve

Valve has introduced a new update to its VRS system for CS2, tightening the rules around how teams with international rosters are ranked and invited to Majors.

For those unfamiliar, the VRS system is how Valve ranks CS2 teams within their respective regions. These standings play a crucial role in determining which teams receive direct invites to major tournaments, including the highly anticipated Budapest Major later this year.

The system rewards performance over time, and regional standings help ensure balanced representation from North America, Europe, South America, Asia, and beyond.

Previously, teams with mixed-nationality lineups—say, an even split of North American and European players—had the freedom to choose which region they would represent in the standings. That’s now changed.

According to the latest update, teams will now appear in only one region’s ranking, and if their roster doesn’t have a clear regional majority, they’ll automatically be assigned to the stronger region, as defined by Valve’s criteria.
