UK Government “Hunts” For Head of Video Games and eSports

The UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has announced a new leadership role: Head of Video Games and eSports. This position aims to bolster the nation’s rapidly expanding gaming and eSports sectors. The role offers a salary between £52,000 and £61,000, is full-time with hybrid working options, and comes with a two-year contract. Applications are open for the next few weeks.

Role Overview

The appointed individual will be instrumental in shaping policies that support the growth and competitiveness of the UK’s video games and eSports industries. Responsibilities include implementing measures from the forthcoming Creative Industries Sector Vision, engaging with stakeholders across government, industry, and academia, and promoting the UK as a global leader in these sectors.

Esports Recognition and Events

While eSports is not officially recognized as a sport in the UK, it has received commendation from officials like the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who described Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as “a global leader” in the industry.

The UK’s eSports scene continues to thrive, with major events scheduled throughout 2025, including the BLAST Open at Wembley and the RLCS Birmingham Major.
